  16. Dear Suresh,

Thanks for all these info. Need your valuable guidance on this case.

My Parents are insured with Star health red carpet since march,2010. My mother(63) was recently hospitalised for sudden symptoms of anemia and received blood transfusion. I got 30k against claim of 88k from star. They deny cashless sighting various reasons. My father (75)was hospitalised for dengue in 2010 when the reimbursed 60% of the claim.

Both are insured for Rs 200000 each. I am considering for a portability of the policy to New India/ National/ United India after reading your analysis. Kindly suggest if it's possible – and are there any charges for portability? Are there any waiting period with the new insurer after shifting the policies?

    Thank you.

    1. Sid, I am sure there are portability charges, but heard they are very less. However regarding waiting period, yes I understand there is waiting period. Suggest you talk to customer care to get exact details.

    2. Dear Sir,

You already might have got your solution, however, still I would like to suggest you, what might help you, if you haven't done it yet.

      1. You can port your policy, only at the time of policy renewal.

      2. You will get all benefits of waiting period or other bonuses accumulated at previous insurer, if you policy is active.

      3.  Start with writing to your insurer, citing the exact reason of portability.  They will need details of your new insurer and it is supposed to happen this way.  Please consult your both the service providers regarding portability, as policy differ from company to company.

      Hope this will help you,

      Regards,

      Raghabendra Pradhan

  26. Hi Suresh,

I am looking for medical insurence for my father age 57 with high BP.
Most of above mentioned policies have min entry age mentioned as more than 60.
Can you please suggest me good medical policy for my father with minimum waiting period for pre-existing disease.

Also I want to know if I can take any medical insurence for my mother age 52 dignosed with thyroid cancer in feb 2013. Most of the companies I checked with are not offering policy for pre-exisitng cancer disease. Let me know if there is any medical policy which can issue policy for cancer patient, though  it has waiting period of upto 4 years.

I am looking for policy of 2 lakhs for both.

Please suggest. Thanks a lot for article.

    1. Ashish. Most of the healthcare policies do not offer pre-existing diseases coverage. They would cover only after 3 years. Please check max bupa health insurance policy which I have reviewed and this would be posted on this Thursday. It is one of the good unique health care policy

      1. Can I take National Insurance – Varishta healthcare plan at age of 57?

Which company offers policy for existing cancer patient?

        1. Hi Ashish. I am yet to review this policy, hence cannot comment immediately now. None of the health care policies can cover pre-existing diseases. They would cover only after 3 to 4 years of policy registration.

  27. Can suggest a good health insurance policy for my mother,  age  58 yrs,  no pre existing diseases .  Can pay single premeum also

    is any medical check required?.

  28. I heard at reliance general insurance how is it??

  29. Hi Suresh,

    Excellent!!!

useful article for the people like me who are unable to decide about the insurance policy for the senior citizens. post more n more about such issues. by the way, could you please focus on which insurance company has the good history of settling the medical claims?

    look forward to your response.

    Ahmed.

  30. Thank Suresh for info

Request your help; My father is already insured thru National health insurance; the only glitch being the TPA does not have many hospitals covered by it in my state (kerala)..Can something be done about it?

Also, I am looking for a policy myself (including my wife)..a family floater or so. We are aged 33 and 27 yrs. We are covered by our company for now, but would like to take one neveretheless. Would that be a good decision? or should I just wait? Could you recommend us a few companies that we can research on? are maternity cost included? What about cases involving Assisted reproduction for women..etc?

    1. Hi Jokula, We cannot do much with existing national health insurance policy. If required you may need to consider taking additional policy. You can review the policies indicated here and take one which suits you. Regd your and your wife, I would prefer you to still consider taking one. You can review max bupa health insurance or apollo munich health insurance. Each and every health policy have their pros and cons, hence go thru T&C and consider them.

  31. Hi Suresh

very nice Article.thanks for sharing it.  My father in law needs to undergo knee operation. For which me and my husband are looking for best parental health insurance. After going through above little confused as in which one i must go for. However if I consider pros and cons of all the above health insurance companies I feel star health insurance is good. Please clarify on this. Do they cover 100% of hospitalization expenses? We are planning for surgery with in this year since it is in early stage. Do they cover with in a year of the policy.

    1. Hi Pari, All major health insurance companies cover existing diseases after 4 years only. Yes I have seen Start health insurance is good. Max Bupa health insurance is also good. You can review and consider them.

  32. Dear Suresh,

Many thanks for starting this website and helping others.

Could you please help me or suggest on the below.

My father(age 57) just underwent Angiogram and found that there is a block in the blood flow. It is not severe but he may undergo Angioplasty at any point of time. Currently he does not have a health insurence.

I am working for TCS which is having partnership withMEDI ASSIST. I did not enroll my parents name withing 90 days of date of joining and so i will be able to enrole my parents name in mediassist in my entire tenure in TCS.

Is there any way that i can directly take a coverage for my parents from mediassist as documentation is not required?

Or please suggest me any plan that suits my requirement ( which covers my father's angioplasty treatment at any point of time after enrolling ).

    Thanks a lot in advance

    1. Looks Mediassist is third party and not insurer. You can check with them who is your insurance company and generally they would allow you to include your parents with addtional costs. But wondering why you have not included your father name in your insurance coverage? If your family is already covered, consider adding your father name with additional premiums.

    2. Dear,

You can get your parents insured with TCS Health Insurance Cover with Mediassist.

TCS opens a window during the month of April every year to add dependents for HIS cover.

      They publish that in Ultimatix.

      Thanks

  33. Hi Suresh,

I am 32 years old and covered under group health insurance from my employer. My father is 62 years old and has Parkinsons Disease. My mother is 57 years old who has Kidney Failure and is on dialysis. In my parents case, can I get any health insurance policy for them? Or will these diseases be excluded by most of the insurance companies?

    Thanks,

    Navit

  34. Hi there,

What I want you to know is a decent Health/Medical cover for my parents (who are Senior Citizens living in Chennai).

Basically a good Medical cover that covers my DAD (76 years), my MOM (74 years) and my Step-Mother (68 years).

In case of any hospitilization, they should be not be shedding too much money from their pocket, if you know what I mean.

    Kindly advice please.

    Thanks
    Prem

    1. Hi Prem After detailed investigation, I felt the ones indicated in article are good policies. Please review them and approach concerned health insurance companies.

  35. Hi suresh,

My Father is 63 years, eye surgery to be done and mother 45 days has diabities.so reffer me which health insurance is suitable.

    1. Prashun, As indicated earlier to others, every health insurance policy comes with terms and conditions. Some of the good ones I have listed here. Please check and see which one suites your requirement.

  36. Dear Suresh,
It was a very helpful article. I have a few doubts.
I am currently 26 years old. I have joined a job which covers all my medical expenses. I am looking for a plan for my parents. Both my parents are in 51-54 years range.
They are currently not under any mediclaim/health insurance plan. I wish to search for a plan for them.
    1) Are there any plans floating for that age range which cover OPD facilities and expenses related to that like lab tests & medicines?
    2) Are their any insurance plans which offer full body check-up to gauge non-coverage of pre-existing diseases?
    3) What are the usual catches in Medical Insurance Claims?
    4) Can I get any benefit, in terms of Income tax, from opening the medical insurance ONLY for my father and mother? Or will it be better to include myself in the same plan?

    Warm Regards
    Rohit Raj

    1. Rohit, 1) As per my knowledge, there are no such health plan which covers OPD charges 2) You can try Max bupa which has several coverages 3) It depends. You should ensure you get coverage without any limitations or with limited limitations like it is there in reliance health assurance plan or max bupa plan 4) Section 80D would allow you to get benefit upto Rs 15,000 for medical insurance benefit. You can consider taking family floater plan which covers you and your parents.

  37. HI Suresh,

My father is 48 years old. NO helath insurance till now. Mother is 44 yrs. Recently my father has been treated with Angioplasty wunder Arogya Sri insurance. 38. Hey Suresh,

    Regards

    Deepak

    1. Deepak, Most of the health insurance would cover cancer diseases, but only after 4 years. Max Bupa health insurance is one such health insurance plan. I have reviwed it and the article would get posted this week.

really nice article. I want to take health insurance policy for my Mother age 54 and Father age 61 with no pre disease.I am looking for 10 lakh joint policy for Parents.Maximum disease coverage, lifetime renewal. Please suggest me best plan for my parents

    Thanks

      1. Suresh, i want to cover my parents in single plan but above plans shows entry age from 60 years. and my mothers age is 54 years. How can i get above plan for my mother. Plz suggest me plan that will cover my fater (61 age) and mother (age 54) in single plan for lifetime .

        Thanks

        1. Sushil, Above plans are only best suitable for 60+ years. However there are several other plans for like Reliance health assure plan or LIC Jeevan Arogya where you can cover your mother at this age. Check those options

  43. I am from Mumbai age 38.5 years.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in late 2008.

I am a bachelor and wish to remain so for my life due to personal reasons.

Also being diagnosed with Type 2 DM came to me as a shock though both my parents have

a history of Type 2 diabetes.

There are so many Health insurance companies in the market currently.

I do not know which health insurance policy to select and which suits me the best

    as I am a diabetic.

I require a comprehensive individual  policy for myself which will cover any diabetes related complications

and normal hospitalisation costs in future.eg say I have an accident ,it should cover costs of hospitalisation then  also or for say knee replacement surgery in case of arthritis.

My mother expired at 65 yrs age due to stroke in 2010. My father is 68 . He has type 2 diabetes

since 1988. I don't want a policy for him because he is covered in a Group Insurance policy from my brother if at all he has to be hospitalised in future.

Though hospitalisation costs occur normally after 50 yrs age, I wish to start a policy for myself now which will cover me till atleast 70 -75 years if not more.

I am open for any policy from Govt or private insurer but it should be a good comprehensive policy

with maximum sum assured possible and with cashless facility (for network hospitals).

Can you suggest some good p[olicies.

    1. Hi Amit, Life is like that, we should move on. There are a few health policies only for diabetic patients thought there are several life insurances policies. Thought I have not done extensive analysis, here are the two which came to my mind and their relevant details. 1) ICICI Diabetic care: http://www.iciciprulife.com/public/Health-plans/DiabCare.htm 2) Star diabetic care: http://www.starhealth.in/diabetessafe.php While you can review them, let me do some extenstive research and come back for some more policies with positives and drawbacks. You would see an article in next 2 weeks about this.

  44. Hi,

is there any health insurance which will cover in one policy for my Father -57 year/ Mother -46year  including me 24years and my brother 22 years age . pls suggest good insurence plan(company) . and what will be the premium cost yearly/monthly.

here ia age limit is very less.can u suggest any other issurance

    thanks  and regrads

    1. Hi Surbhan, If you go for individual policies for parents, you can get more policies like what I indicated on this article. For group policies, I feel there are some restrictions on max age limit.

  48. is there any health insurance which will cover my mom -dad-me -my wife and two children.in one policy.

    1. Hi Suryabhan, There are several policies like that. LIC Jeevan Arogya is one like that. One can add their in-laws to such policy 🙂

  49. Can suggest a good health insurance policy for my sister,  age  64 yrs,  no pre existing diseases except BP.  Can pay single premeum also (is it advisable ?).

Are there any policies which give insurance & minimum interest/return on investment (10 to 15 lakhs)

    1. Hi Someswararao, All the health plans indicated here are good. At this age, I would not advice to go for single premium health insurance. Looks your second question is about life insurance. I do not think, there are any money back life insurance policies issued at this age.

  50. hi my age 61,i need good insurces plan, only i need sum assured(10,00000)pls tell whice company best? need a medical?

    1. Hi Fathima, currently majority of insurance companies are going for medical tests after 50+. all the plans indicated here are good. Choose one which is best suitable for you.

        1. Fathima, ICICI Healthcare plus plan indicates that every person after 45 years need to undergo medical tests. You can reach them at 1800 2666 and enquire

  51. thanks

me also have for my mother new india assurance with cover of 3,00000 and i pay 9500 per year.

i heard that nowadays casless are not claim in mumbai -is i right ?

and if any issurance policy will cover me ,wife ,2kids and parents

    thanks and regards.

    1. There is no such news that cashless facility is stopped in Mumbai. Pls recheck with customer care of insurance company. You can review new reliance health care insurance policy for your and your wife.

  52. Hi Suresh,

Does it required to do a medical check-up before choosing the right policy?

    Thanks a lot

    1. Hi Soma, it depends upon the insurance company. Most of the insurance companies would make this as practice to have medical check-up done after 40 or 50 years

      1. Thanks Suresh.

My father is 65yrs old and he is healthy. I have decided to go with National Insurance.

Could you please suggest some policy for my mother (55yrs) and Myself for 5lacks? Later I would like to add my family(after marriage) into this policy.

Note: I have already a helath policy from my company upto 1 lacks.

        Thanks

  53. hi,'

I am having Star health insurance.premium faliny optima for my parents is increasing year after year.

    Is this a gud one.

    Father's age is 55+ . diabetes patient

    mother's age is 50+

some people suggested tht Claiming is a risk in star health insurance

    please suggest

    1. Kiran, While taking health insurance, you should not just look at the premium. You should look at other riders the health insurance is providing. You need to check the claims payment ratio (% age of claims paid by insurance company). It is very difficult to say whether it is risk to claim money from an insurance company. It depends on the claim you are putting up along with other details which you would have provided during applying the claim.

  54. Dear Suresh,

Nice article. Probably you could have given the premium amounts as well for each company charging. Also, we have an impression that the public companies charge lesser premiums but services are bad, and private companies charges hefty premiums but with good services. Pls commets on my opinion.

    Thanks

    Ravi N

    1. Ravi, my initial though was to include premiums. But premiums would vary for each and every lakh of insurance + additiona benefits on additional premiums + age factor. Hence with all such combination, deriving applicable healthcare premiums would not very tough and it can change any moment. Thanks for the feedback.
