Some of the taxpayers would have shifted from one location to another location or one house to another house and necessary contact details and address would have got changed. I recently shifted to a new house and I was wondering how to change my address on income tax website. I thought, I can provide this as an article as many of you might be looking for this. In this article, I would provide step-by-step details how to update email ID, contact/mobile nos and address in Income Tax Website.

Why it is necessary to update contact details and address on Income Tax Website?


Generally, all communication regarding your income tax filing is sent to your registered email ID. Necessary income tax alerts are sent to your mobile number. Cheque refund communications, Income Tax Demand Notice etc., are sent to your communication address. Hence it is important that you update all these details on Income Tax website.

How to change / update email ID and Contact/mobile  number on the Income Tax Website?


Here is the step-by-step process on you can update your email ID and contact details.

  • Visit Income tax website (https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/)
  • Click on Login option, enter User ID(which is your PAN Number) and password to login.
  • Go to Profile Settings and My Profile Option.
  • Click on contact details tab.
  • You would see email ID / Contact nos.
  • Review and update them (if required)
  • Click Save
  • Verify your contact details. If required click go back button and make changes.
  • Select Continue
  • Two PIN numbers would be generated. One would be sent to your email ID and second one to your mobile number.  Please check your email and mobile for these PINs. These two Pins are valid for 24 hours. If you do not get these PIN’s, you can choose “Resend PINs” option to get them again. In case, you miss to enter these Two Pins before 24 hours, you need to follow the same process again.
  • You need to enter both these PIN’s for verification and submit.
  • Confirmation mail is sent by Income Tax Department to your mail ID and on mobile about this update.

How to change / update your address on the Income Tax Website?


Here is the step-by-step process on how you can update your communication address. Please note, it changes only address in the Income Tax Website and not the address of your PAN Card.

  • Visit Income tax website (https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/)
  • Click on Login option, enter User ID(which is your PAN Number) and password to login.
  • Go to Profile Settings and My Profile Option
  • Click on address details tab.
  • You would see current address
  • Review them and update (if required)
  • Click Save
  • Your address is updated. Generally, no confirmation is sent to your email or mobile number. You can log-out and log-in again to check that these changes are affected.

  1. Hi, I am an NRI senior citizen residing in USA. I am an Indian Pensioner, eiling tax returns. I would like to replace my Indian address & phone number with USA address and USA phone number on my tax return forms. will it be possible?

I have forgotten my password for efiling itr.During resetting only one pin received on my email and no pin was recd on mobile because of which I failed in resetting of password.Secondly I answered correct answer of security question but got response as incorrect answer.Pl help how can reset my password on efiling ITR site.Due to above I failed to file the return within prescribed time ie up to 05.08.2017 for the financial year 2016-17.I am apensioner.
