It is a new concept and many a companies are not offering solely maternity insurance covers. However, few companies offer some health plans with coverage of maternity insurance as add-on at the payment of extra premium. Generally, maternity coverage is covered by general insurance companies under the corporate group insurance policy with a sub-limit of Rs. 50,000. It is usually the best form of maternity cover, so one should check with the human resource department of the company.

Points to be considered in Maternity Health insurance plan
There are certain points that are to be considered before opting for a maternity insurance coverage.
1) Waiting period in maternity coverage
It is the minimum time one has to wait before he or she gets the claim under the insurance policy. We should always choose a plan which has shortest waiting period. Normally, there is a long waiting span of 2 to 6 years before you can get the claim of medical expenses under such plans. However, it can be lowered by paying an additional premium.
2) Which expenses are covered
A maternity cover should include all the delivery charges (caesarean too) and any complications arising thereof, prenatal and post-natal expenses together with the post-birth care and vaccinations of the newborn too. But, it is very difficult to find such a policy which includes all the factors.
3) Sum assured for maternity coverage
Few policies provide the maternity cover up to Rs. 15,000 for normal delivery and Rs. 25,000 for caesarean for a sum assured of Rs. 3 – 5 Lakhs. There are many health plans that have been extended to maternity covers till Rs. 50,000. But, these sums seem insufficient in the metro cities where expenses can soar as high as Rs 1 lakh.
4) New born cover
The policy should cover the expenses of the treatment of new born baby from day one along with the pre and post natal care of the mother.

Here is the analysis of few health plans that cover maternity expenses too provided by some reputed companies.
1) Religare Joy Health insurance plan
Here are the major features of Religare Joy health insurance plan
- The minimum entry age to enter into this policy for an adult is 18 years and the baby is covered from day 1.
- The maximum age by which this policy can be made is 65 years for adults and 24 years for child.
- There are two variants in the policy. For a sum assured of Rs. 3 Lakhs, the maternity expenses covered would be maximum of Rs. 35,000 which includes pre-natal and post-natal expenses. For a sum assured of Rs. 5 Lakhs, it is Rs. 50,000.
- The hospitalization expenses are covered, but for only 30 days prior to hospitalization and 60 days post hospitalization.
- The waiting period can be 9 months or 24 months as per the policy and premium variations.
- For new born baby cover, you can get a cover up to Rs. 30,000 for a sum insured of Rs. 3 Lakhs and Rs. 50,000 for a sum of Rs. 5 Lakhs. It is to be noted that this facility is available only till the age of 90 days of the baby.
- The vaccination expenses of the new born baby are borne by the company as per national immunization over and above maternity expenses.

2) Apollo Munich’s Easy Health Insurance
- The minimum entry age to enter into this policy is 5 years and the maximum age is 65 years.
- There are few variants available in the policy.
- For a sum insured of Rs. 3-5 Lakhs, the maternity expenses covered by the policy are Rs. 15,000 in case of delivery and Rs. 25,000 for caesarean including the pre and post natal limit of Rs. 1,500. The waiting period here is 4 years.
- For a sum insured of Rs. 7.5 to 10 Lakhs, coverage of Rs. 25,000 is available for normal delivery and Rs. 40,000 for caesarean delivery, including a pre and post natal limit of Rs. 2,500.
- For a sum insured of Rs. 15, 25 or 50 Lakhs, normal and caesarean delivery, are covered to a limit of Rs. 30,000 and 50,000 respectively. The waiting period is only 3 years.
- The hospitalization expense coverage for maternity is not available in this policy.
- The waiting period is 36 or 48 months, but can be brought down to 24 months at the payment of additional premium.
- The new born baby coverage is not provided. It can be covered only by paying extra premium.
- The vaccination expenses are not at all covered.
3) Cigna TTK’s Pro Health Insurance Plus Plan
- The minimum age to attain this policy is 18 years for adults and 91 days for kids.
- There is no maximum age specified to enter into this policy.
- The maternity expenses are covered up to Rs. 15,000 for normal delivery and Rs. 25,000 for caesarean.
- The hospitalization of maternity expenses is not covered.
- The normal waiting period is 48 months, but can be lowered to 24 months by paying additional premium.
- All the vaccination expenses of the new born baby are covered up to 1 year.
- The pre and postnatal expenses are not at all borne by the policy.
Conclusion: With the increase in the average age of maternity in women, the complications to have multiplied during pregnancies. To meet up the health related issues during these crucial times, many a women are opting for health insurance plans that cover maternity expenses too.
For the working women who are covered under the group insurance, need not think about it, but the non working women should opt for such insurance immediately after marriage to take care of the long waiting period.
