Step-by-Step Process to e-Verify ITR without logging into e-Filing account


Filing income tax returns (ITR) is a cumbersome exercise. Once you file your ITR, your job is not yet over. You need to e-verify your income tax returns within 90 days to complete the process. While there are several methods to do e-verification of ITR, IT department now has provided one more new feature to do e-verification. In this method, you don’t need to login to e-filing account of Income Tax website to do e-verification. In this article, we would provide Step-by-Step process on how to e-verify of your Income Tax Returns (ITR) without logging into your e-filing account.

What is income Tax Return (ITR)?


If you are already familiar, you can skip this section.

If any individual has taxable income in India, they need to file income tax returns before 31st July every year pertaining to the previous financial year. For FY2018-19, the deadline was extended upto 31st August, 2019 considering there is delay in issuing new form-16s and other challenges.

What is e-verification of income Tax Return (ITR)?


Once you complete your tax filing on an income tax website or third party websites like cleartax, etc., your job is not yet completed. You need to e-verify your ITR to complete the process. This process need to be completed within 90 days / 3 months after the deadline is over.

What are various ways available currently to e-Verify ITR now?


Here are 6 ways where E-verification can be done currently.

1) eVerify ITR through One Time Password (OTP).

2) eVerify ITR by generating EVC code through the Net – banking facility.

3) eVerify ITR by getting EVC through a pre-validated bank account

4) You can do everification of ITR through Demat Account

5) Complete everification of ITR through Aadhaar based OTP method

6) You can complete e-verification by taking printout and signing and sending it to CPC Bangalore. This is a very old method.

Except for point no.6, most of other methods require you to login to efiling website. Now, IT Depaterment has introduced one more method, where you can e-verify ITR without logging to efiling site.

Step-by-Step Process to e-Verify ITR without logging into e-Filing account


This is a complete online method of verification.

Step-1 – Visit Income Tax Website here

Step-2 – Visit “Quick Links” on the left hand side as shown in below screenshot.

Step-3 – This would take you to e-Verify return page. You need to enter PAN number, Assessment Year (in this case it would be 2019-2020) and acknowledgement number. When you file income tax returns, you would have received email with your ITR Ack number which is required here to enter. See the screenshot below.

Step-4 – Based on PAN, Assessment Year and Ack number entered, this would take you to a screen which would get 3 options on how you want to do e-verification of your ITR.

Option-1 – I already  have an EVC to e-verify my return

Option-2 – I do not have an EVC and I would like to generate EVC to e-verify my return

Option-3 – I would like you to use Aadhaar OTP to e-verify my return

Step-5 – Consider one of the above steps and your e-verification of ITR is completed.

What is EVC?


An Electronic Verification Code (EVC) is a 10 digit alphanumeric code which is sent to the registered mobile number of the income tax filer while filing his/her returns online. It helps verify the identity of the tax filers. Such tax filers include individuals as well as Hindu Undivided Family (HUF).

How to generate EVC if you don’t have one?


You can generate Electronic Verification Code (EVC) in various methods. Below are few sample methods.

1) Generate EVC via net banking


Only selected banks offer this facility. Your PAN number should be linked to your bank account.

You need to log-off from an income tax website before proceeding further.

You need to login to your net banking with ID and password. You can visit “Tax” or “Tax Centre” tab and click on e-verify.

This would take you to an income tax website. Visit my account section and click on generate EVC. This would generate 10 digit alphanumberic code which ca be used to everify your ITR.

2) Generate EVC via ATM


This is a very simple process, however, one has to visit the ATM.

You can visit ATM and swipe your card by providing the PIN. Once you see your details,there is option “Income Tax Filing” and “EVC generation”. Once you click that, 10 digit EVC would be sent to your registered mobile number which is valid for 72 hours.

Once you get EVC you can do e-verification of your income tax returns without logging into income tax websites.

    Help me understand, once we receive our income tax returns refund then I need to follow this procedure or this has nothing to do with refund?
    Does this applicable to ITR-2 tax filling as well?

    • There are 3 steps 1) Do efiling 2) Do e-verification by 7 methods. One of the method is indicated here 3) If you are expecting refund you would get once the step-1 and step-2 are completed. If you have not done step-2, please complete it. This applies to all ITR forms
