Govt of India has mandated to link Aadhaar Card to PAN Card in India. Couple of days back, I realized that my spouse Aadhaar Card is not yet linked to PAN Card. It took few minutes to link Aadhaar Card and PAN Card through online. I thought whatever the process I followed could be useful for others too. In this article I would tell you how to link Aadhaar Card to PAN Card online, SMS and through ITR filing in all 3 methods. This article would also help you if you have doubt on how to check whether your Aadhaar Card is linked to your PAN Card or not?

Why to link Aadhaar Card and PAN Card?


Section 139AA of the Income-tax Act says that every person who has been allotted permanent account number as on the 1st day of July, 2017, and who is eligible to obtain Aadhaar number, shall intimate his Aadhaar number to such authority in such form and manner as may be prescribed, on or before a date to be notified by the Central Government in the Official Gazette.

How to link Aadhaar Card and PAN Card in India?


There are a few ways you can do to link your Aadhaar Card and PAN Card in India.

Method – 1 – How to link Aadhaar Card and PAN Card at Income Tax Website online?


This method is simple which I did it which it took 2 minutes time.

Step#1 – Visit Income tax website at this link. If this link is not working for some reason, you can visit https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in and go to Link Aadhaar and PAN card link on home page.

Step#2 – Enter your PAN Number, Aadhaar number and Name as per Aadhaar

Step#3 – If date of birth in your Aadhaar card is entered only for year and date is entered as 01/01, you can check this option of “I have only year of birth in Aadhaar Card” (for senior citizens this might be applicable as date of birth would not have been entered properly Aadhaar card preparation)

Step# – Enter Captca

Step#4 – Click on Link Aadhaar button.

You would get message stating that your Aadhaar Card is linked to your PAN number. You are done and nothing else needs to be done.

Method-1 of How to link Aadhaar Card and PAN Card in India

Method – 2 – How to link Aadhaar Card and PAN Card through SMS?


To do this method, you should have your Aadhaar Card and mobile no + PAN Card + mobile no already linked earlier.

Step#1 – Take your registered mobile and start typing SMS. Send SMS to 567678 or 56161 from your registered mobile number in following format:

Step#2 – SMS should contain the following. UIDPAN <SPACE> <12 digit Aadhaar> <Space> <10 digit PAN>. It would look like “UIDPAN 123456789012 PAN1234567”

Step#3 – You would get message that your Aadhaar Card is linked to PAN Card. However, if there is mismatch in the names of both PAN Card and Aadhaar or any minor mismatch, it would get registration failed. In such case you should go for method-1.

Method 3 – How to link Aadhaar Card and PAN Card at Income Tax Website while filing income tax returns (ITR)?


Step#1 – Login into Income tax website at this link while filing income tax returns

Step#2 – Once you login you would get pop-up saying to link Aadhaar Card with PAN Card. Just click on that link and enter Aadhaar Card number and it would be linked successfully.

Step#3 – Sometimes there is no pop-up when you logged-in. In such case, you should visit to menu à Profile Settings à Link Aadhaar link. Enter Aadhaar Card number and it would be linked successfully.

Method-3 of How to link Aadhaar Card and PAN Card in India when ITR filing
