LIC Jeevan Arogya Health Insurance Plan-ReviewLIC Jeevan Arogya Health Insurance Plan-Review

Last week, I was discussing with one of my friend about health insurance policies, where he indicated that he would make his spouse happy by including his parent-in-laws in LIC Jeevan Arogya Policy as they are not protected with any other insurance policy. While this could be a single point for him to consider LIC Jeevan Arogya Health Policy, but there are several other features which needs to be reviewed before considering it. In this article, I would discuss about LIC Jeevan Arogya Health insurance plan, its features and drawbacks.

Features of LIC Jeevan Arogya Health insurance plan

1) This is a non-lined health insurance plan. Benefits are fixed irrespective of actual expenses.

2) Self/Spouse can be joined in this plan with a minimum age of 18 years and max age of 65 years. Parents / Parent-In-Laws can be joined with maximum age of 75 years. Children can be included between 91 days to 17 years of age.

3) Hospital cash benefit or sum assured are paid irrespective of actual expenses at hospital.

4) Hospital Cash benefit (HCB) would be paid for number of days the insured is hospitalized based on different categories like Rs 1,000; Rs 2,000; Rs 3,000 and Rs 4,000. Premium depends on the different categories and based on age. However HCB would be payable only after 24 hours of hospitalization.

5) Surgery benefit: LIC Jeevan Arogya plan includes 140 different surgeries. In case of any surgery listed here, you will be paid 100 times of HCB. If there is a surgery for Rs 4,000 category, you would be paid Rs 4,000 x 100 = Rs 4 Lakhs.

6) Day care procedure benefit: Covers 140 day care procedures. You should stay at least 24 hours to claim this benefit. You would get 5 times of HCB. Means if you have taken Rs 4,000 category, you would get 5 x Rs 4,000 = Rs 20,000 irrespective of day care procedures.

7) Special double benefit: Due to medical complications, if the insured is hospitalized and admitted in ICU, they would get benefit of 2 times of HCB.

8) Premium waiver benefit: One year premium waiver benefit if insured underwent surgery as per surgeries listed.

9) There are 2 riders. Term insurance rider – 100 times of HCB would be paid and second one is Accident benefit rider where Sum assured would be paid which would be less than or equal to term insurance rider.

Drawbacks of LIC Jeevan Arogya Policy

  • Benefit limits: For first year, if an insured admitted in ICU-maximum limit to claim is 15 days and NON-ICU is 30 days. From 2nd year onwards, it would be ICU-45 days and NON-ICU-90 days. There is also a limit for lifetime benefits. ICU-360 days and Non-ICU-720 days. Means beyond this you cannot claim any benefit.

  • Major surgery benefit limit to 1 / year and 8 / lifetime. Means beyond this limit, you would not get this benefit.
  • Maximum sum assured is Rs 4 Lakhs which is very low looking at current expenses for healthcare.
  • If your both parents or both parent-in-laws are live, you should include both parents or both parent-in-laws. You cannot include your mother leaving father from the policy.
  • When multiple surgeries are happening at same session, you are eligible to get benefit for only one surgery.
  • Zero benefit up to 24 hours hospitalization.

Conclusion: Currently major health insurance policies are offering the benefits offered by LIC Jeevan Arogya. With so many drawbacks and limitations, LIC Jeevan Arogya health policy does not look attractive. There are better health insurance policies like Reliance Health assure plus, MaxBupa health insurance, Apollo Munich health insurance etc. where one can review and consider it.

    1. Amit, There are various  policies and they would depend upon the individual requirement. You can refer to Reliance health care policy or Max Bupa health insurance policy. I heard Apollo Munich health insurance is also good, I am yet to review it personally.

  3. which according to you is the optimum health policy to choose?

    my (female) age : 25; husband : 28; mother in law : 54; father in law : 64

no major health conditions of in-laws; only MIL has blood pressure problem and that too is a rare event.

    1. Supriya, There is no such optimum policy. It depends on several factors like age, dependents, riders which you want to include, value of health insurance which you want to take. I felt this is the only health insuranc policy where In-Laws are covered. However the health insurance cost would be on higher side comparing to others.

  4. Hi Suresh,

Very good and informative review. I know this is quite different from investment ideas you are suggesting, but if possible, please review other health insurance policies from max bupa, apollo munich, reliance and oriental insurace. Thanks.
