If you are investing in mutual funds, you might heard investors saying it is difficult to pick-up mutual funds and some feel they go with simple thumb rules and select funds. Some investors crib saying that their mutual funds portfolio is showing negative returns inspite of doing proper research. While there are several hundreds of mutual fund schemes, only a few hundred outperform the benchmark. Do you know that there are 20 equity mutual fund schemes that generated positive returns every year in the last 10 years? Let me provide more details about such schemes in this article.

How we filtered these mutual fund schemes?

We used simple filter of mutual funds that generated positive returns every year (1-Jan to 31-Dec). e.g. if fund generated positive returns every year from 2014 to 2023, this fund is being considered here.

We applied this filter for all equity funds including sector funds, we got 20 mutual fund schemes.

  • Pls note that Groww MF has acquired Indiabulls MF business and it merged Nifty 50 ETF and Arbitrage fund into Groww Largecap Fund, hence performance might not reflect for single fund.

  • One should note that ICICI Pru Passive Strategy fund is fund of fund that invests in Nifty ETFs of ICICI MF that are related to Nifty bank ETF, Nifty Healthcare ETF, Nifty IT ETF etc., Means this is more like an index fund rather than the active flexicap fund. Investors need to consider this aspect before investing in such funds.
  • If you are high risk taker and willing to invest for medium term to long term of 5+ years, investors can invest in such funds.

#4 – One Multicap Fund – Positive returns every year in last 10 years

There is only 1 single multicap fund that generated positive returns in the last 10 years every year. Here are the annualised returns in the last 3, 5 and 10 years.

  • Since this fund invests in midcap and smallcap stocks too, it is high risk fund.  While I am not against multicap funds (that has to invest 25% each in largecap, midcap and smallcap stocks), investors can look for flexicap funds where there is no such restriction about investments by the fund managers.

#5 – One Global Fund – Positive returns every year in last 10 years

There is only 1 global / international fund that generated positive returns in the last 10 years every year. Here are the annualised returns in the last 3, 5 and 10 years.

  • Since this fund invests in global markets, there are several risks of investing in them (geo political risk, forex conversion rate risk etc.). This fund generated just above FD returns in the last 3 to 10 years. Should investors take high risk for such just above FD returns? Think Think and you would get answer.

6 – Three Sector Funds – Positive returns every year in last 10 years

Here are the 3 sector funds and their annualised returns in the last 3, 5 and 10 years.

  • The returns range between 15.3% to 23.3% with average returns of 16.6%.
  • These are sector funds that invests in specific sector / themes. Such funds would perform well in short to medium term. However in medium to long term these might take U turn and erose wealth. See what happened to pharma funds pre-covid. These have underperformed and generated negative or low returns for almost 5 years. Unless investors think that such specific themes / sectors would perform well in coming years, they should avoid such funds.

  • ELSS Tax Saving Funds (ELSS) provide tax savings u/s 80c upto Rs 1.5 Lakhs during financial year. If your goal is to have tax savings u/s 80c, you can do SIP in such ELSS funds for atleast 9-12 months instead of single one time / lumpsum investment.

Conclusion: These 20 funds have generated positive returns every year in the last 10 years. However every fund is not suitable to you. You should invest based on your investment goal, risk appetite and time frame which can help you to generate high returns in medium to long term.
